African Heritage Month/Black History Month

February is African Heritage Month

African Heritage PosterThe PSAC would like to take this opportunity to recognize the important sacrifices and contributions of the people of African decent to the nation-building and the defense of Canada since the early 1600's.

The proud, rich history and heritage of African Canadians can no longer be ignored. Society, schools, governments and unions must address the systemic exclusion that has been practiced by our institutions omitting or devaluing the experiences of our African Canadian Sisters and Brothers.

As the drive for privatization and restructuring continues, workers of colour, along with Aboriginal workers, are particularly vulnerable as they are the first to lose their jobs. The PSAC has committed itself to bringing this inequity to the forefront of the struggle and finding systemic solutions to this systemic problem.

The PSAC reaffirms its commitment to combating racism in the workplace and the union and extends this invitation to every PSAC member to contribute to the forging of solidarity between ALL Sisters and Brothers.

Quote from Brother Devoe Jaikoah Dyette, Correctional Officer in Kingston

On the issue of racism, Brother Devoe Jaikoah Dyette, Correctional Officer in Kingston, quotes:  "So for all pratical purposes and the hope of a better tomorrow, let us not marvel in the playground of racial despair.  Let us rise with an intelligent approach and do justice against the horror of racism, with provisions for its' victims and deterrents to manifest it's seriousness."
