Sisters and Brothers,
Members of United Steelworkers have been on strike against Vale-Inco since July 13, 2009. The company has a number of concessions on the table such as reduced pension, weakened seniority, slashing bonuses and reductions of wages and bonuses for underground workers. Through the cold winter months, the workers have fought against these demands.
The USW conducted a national financial appeal last year among its own members and is now seeking assistance from the rest of the labour movement to assist the determined members to resist a company that has no regard for Canada or Canadian workers.
While PSAC has made a contribution to their strike fund, I encourage you to make a donation to the special fund the Steelworkers have set up to assist these workers and their families.
You can send a cheque payable to the “National Solidarity Assistance Fund” to the Canadian Labour Congress at 2841 Riverside Drive
Ottawa, Ontario
K1V 8X7.
The CLC will forward the cheques to the United Steelworkers.
For those in the Sudbury, Port Colborne and Voisey's Bay region, please don't hesitate to go and show your support on the picket line.
In solidarity,
John Gordon,
PSAC National President
