Graduate students at Queen's University have formed a volunteer association (TAFA – Teaching Assistants and Fellows Association) with the objective of forming a Local Union of the Public Service Alliance of Canada to ensure effective representation and a meaningful voice in the workplace. The TAFA campaign is officially ‘coming out' on Saturday June 7 at City Park during Kingston's Pride Parade. The TAFA union drive is supported by the Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) at Queen's University. Equality rights are a central concern for TAFA and PSAC and we are committed to equity in the workplace! If you are in the Kingston area come show your support and march with us! If you would like to get involved please visit our TAFA Facebook group at www.facebook.com or our TAFA website (www.qtafa.com) which is scheduled to become active on the day of the Parade.
TAFA stands for the Teaching Assistant and Fellow Association. We are a group of graduate students at Queen's University who have formed a volunteer association with the objective of forming a Local Union of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) to ensure that we gain effective representation and a meaningful voice at our workplace.
TAFA & PSAC Pride Record:
TAFA & PSAC are proud sponsors of the Kingston Pride Parade!
Equality rights are central to our campaign.
TAFA is committed to community building.
TAFA provides space to graduate students who self identify with our goals of equity.
The adoption of PSAC Policy 31 on Sexual Orientation in 1994 made PSAC one of the first unions to recognize the links between the struggle for workers' rights and LGBT rights.
No-discrimination and harassment clauses and policies, benefits extended to same-sex partners, leave provisions such as birth, adoption or bereavement and the equivalent of marriage leave have been negotiated in collective agreements.
PSAC's National Pride Conference provides LGBT members with a safe place to strategize, strengthen solidarity, and become activists and leaders in our union.
We must continue to make LGBT rights a priority at the bargaining table, in our union programs and in our political action campaigns.
It's up to all of us – everyday – to work to ensure that all human beings have equal rights and dignity and are able to fully participate in their union and their communities.
LGBT rights are human rights and must be included in our struggle to build a better Canada and world.
