Your pennies just aren’t good enough! PSAC Prairies region members, from the plains to the peaks, took a break from their regional convention to deliver this message to Treasury Board President Vic Toews. The noisy demonstration, complete with drummers, marched from the convention centre toToews’ office in downtown Winnipeg on Friday, June 13.
While Toews wasn’t in town to receive the message personally, PSAC National President John Gordon left some pennies behind for him, signifying what PSAC members think of the Treasury Board wage offer. Delegates also left signed “No Zones” postcards to reinforce the message.
Back at the convention, Gordon thanked the delegates for their work in promoting quality public services but noted that there is still much work to be done. According to Gordon, nearly one in six Canadian children live in poverty; one in four in First Nations communities. “Our social safety net is disappearing and economic disparity and social exclusion are deepening as our social safety net disappears.”
Gordon urged the delegates to commitment themselves to fighting poverty and exclusion. PSAC is taking action through the union’s Social Justice Fund which is supporting a number of programs in the Prairies, including “Tools for Schools” in Edmonton, the Core Neighbourhood Youth Co-op in Saskatoon and the Andrews Street Family Centre in Winnipeg.
Delegates reelected Robyn Benson by acclamation to her third term as Regional Executive Vice-President for the Prairire region and elected Marianne Hladun to her first term as alternate REVP. Marianne is currently the Equal Opportunities National Director for the PSAC’s Agriculture Union.
