Jean-François Des Lauriers was re-elected as Regional Executive Vice President (REVP) at the PSAC North 4th Triennial Convention held in Yellowknife, NWT May 30 - June 1. More than 120 delegates attended.
A PSAC member since 1978, Brother Des Lauriers was first elected REVP for the North in 1997. He served as a Director on the Executive of the Yukon Employees Union from October 1996 to April 1997- he also chaired the PSAC's Yukon Political Action Committee from 1994-1997. Des Lauriers worked for the department of Indian and Northern Affairs until 1990 when he transferred to Whitehorse airport to work as a firefighter. He then served as President of Local Y3022 of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees.
Coleman Nyathi was chosen by the delegates to serve as alternate REVP for the North. Coleman is a member of the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) and chief shop steward for UNW Local 1.
“United for Action” - the theme for the Convention - served as a rallying cry for the more than 120 delegates who marched in support of the National Day of Action in Support of First Nations on May 29. Delegates with placards and flags marched from the convention and met with about 100 marchers from the Dene Nation.
The march, then led by Aboriginal school children holding their Dene Nation's banner, made its way to Sombe Ke park, where lunch was provided and local band chiefs, along with Des Lauriers, made speeches. The event received attention from both local and national media.
In addition to this rally, delegates also staged a “Stop the Cuts” rally, marching on the Legislative Assembly on May 30, carrying flags, placards and banners. Speeches delivered in front of the Legislative Assembly by Jean-Francois Des Lauriers, Patty Ducharme and Todd Parsons called attention to the territorial government's unnecessary cuts to public services. Afterwards delegates went into the Legislative Assembly to ensure that their presence was noted in session's proceedings.
