National Board of Directors meets June 3-6, 2008

The swearing in of the newly elected Regional Executive Vice Presidents (REVP) was the first order of business at the National Board of Directors (NBoD) meeting held June3-6 at PSAC headquarters in Ottawa.

Returning REVPs Jean-Francois Des Lauriers (North), Gerry Halabecki (Ontario), Kay Sinclair (British Columbia) and Jérôme Turcq (Quebec) were joined by first timer Maria Fitzpatrick who was elected REVP for the National Capital Region.

Highlighting the importance of the upcoming June 19 Day of Action, the members of the Board urged all members to demonstrate their solidarity and send a strong message to Treasury Board by organizing and participating in activities across the country on June 19.

The NBoD also adopted a resolution committing the PSAC to lobbying the federal government to accept the counsel of enlightened medical and law enforcement professionals and support the work of Insite. Located in Vancouver's downtown eastside, Insite is North America's only safe injection site for injection drug users. Dedicated to the principle of harm reduction, the goal of Insite is to prevent overdoses and the spread of blood-borne diseases and to provide a point of access to health and detoxification services for injection drug users.

In the face of the federal government's apparent intent to let Insite's license to operate expire, the British Columbia Supreme Court extended the facility's license for one year and directed the government to redraft its drug laws in order to accommodate Insite's operations. The Harper government has announced that it will appeal the judgment.

The NBoD also adopted a checklist to help reduce the environmental footprint of the many functions and conventions organized by the PSAC.  Developed by the Board's Standing Environment Committee, Meeting and GreeningPDF provides tips, advice and links to help members develop new ways of doing things with a view to lessening the environmental impacts of meetings and other union events.
