Compensation Advisors taking action on their issues

AS-2 Compensation Advisors who are members of the PSAC have been working with their union to take coordinated action to have the federal government address the classification and workplace issues affecting their group.

Altogether, some 1700 PSAC members provide compensation and benefits services to employees of the federal public service, across all departments and agencies. Last year, the President of the PSAC convened a Roundtable of AS members to discuss issues affecting this community. The report from the AS Roundtable paints a picture of a looming recruitment and retention crisis that will undermine the ability of federal employers to pay their employees on time and accurately. The Roundtable recommended several initiatives to address these issues, including action on classification, training, retention, and service delivery.

In January, the PSAC met with representatives of the Public Service Human  Resources Modernization Agency of Canada (PSHRMAC) to raise the issues in the AS Roundtable report. The PSAC published a short update following that meeting, highlighting PSHRMAC's actions to address recruitment, but calling upon the government to step up its training program and take action on the issue of classification for the group.

Following that meeting, many AS members have taken the initiative to write to Treasury Board President Vic Toews to make sure that the federal government is aware of the concerns of the group. Working with National Component and the PSAC, AS members are now circulating a generic draft letter which can be downloaded and used as a basis for letters. AS members are being encouraged to use this as a basis for writing individual letters (on their own time and using their own resources, of course). Letters should be mailed to Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, L'Esplanade Laurier, 9th Floor, East Tower, 140 O'Connor Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1A 0R5. Correspondence should be copied to Patty Ducharme, PSAC National Executive Vice-President at: ducharp@psac.com or c/o PSAC, 233 Gilmour Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 0P1.

To download a Word version of the letter.
