Defending Quality Public ServicesFrom the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Northern territories down to the US border, common values link the communities that make up our society. Our public services are the tools we have collectively given ourselves to achieve our common ideal – a fair, equitable, safe and prosperous society respectful of the environment where no one is left out.
The government's disengagement and its move to become more reliant on the private sector threaten the future of our public services. This directly undermines the quality of life of our citizens and shifts us away from our common ideal.
The decision made at the last PSAC convention to make the defense of quality public services a major issue dovetails in every respect with the movement to free ourselves from market pressures and get back to our social objectives.
Since the vast majority of members of our union work in the public sector, we are able to make a significant contribution to this movement, ranging from promoting quality public services to the public to exercising increased vigilance to prevent them from being eroded.
Our strategic plan is a mobilization and action plan. It allows for both targeted action and for collaborative action between the various components of our union or between our union and our social partners. Let us take action! Let us take political action!
PSAC is taking our defending quality public services message out in the fresh air this summer. Members will be handing out "Public Services are Cool!" fans and leaflets at outdoor events. They'll be meeting with MPs and federal candidates to raise issues and promote the benefits of quality public services.
Help spread the word about quality public services by getting involved in the summer actions! More Details
Delegates to the 2006 PSAC National Convention overwhelmingly passed a policy on Defending Quality Public Services (DQPS), which calls on the PSAC to take on "long term and comprehensive actions to ensure that quality public services are preserved and remain publicly delivered."
The DQPS Policy passed at Convention exposes in general terms what privatization means and why it is important for the PSAC to fight privatization and defend quality public services.
Quality Public Services are what make our country, communities and ourselves safe and protected. They provide us with tools to take care of one another when facing sickness, poverty, unemployment and old age; they bring social equality, by ensuring everyone's basic needs are met and by funding education and special programmes to counter balance the inequities of opportunities. They are what define us as a community, and as a country.
Tax cuts don't seem like such a hot idea if they mean a lower standard of living and reduced quality of life. Quality public services are essential to keeping our communities healthy. Discover the link between your taxes and quality public services.
