big are we?
How big are we?As of December 2004, PSAC had 159,954 members. This was significantly down from our peak in the early 1980s of about 182,000. We lost members after this point due to “downsizing” in the federal public service and hit a low of 141,500 in 1998. Our numbers are growing again, mainly because we've increase our membership in the territories, federal employment is on the rebound and we've organized new members in a variety of sectors. PSAC in the Canadian Labour MovementAccording to the most recent figures (March 2004) from HRSDC's Labour Directory, PSAC was the sixth largest union in Canada in 2004 and the third largest public sector union, after the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the National Union of Public and General Employees. These 10 unions represent over half of the 4.1 million unionized workers in Canada, about 30.5% of the labour force. PSAC represents about 3.8% of all union members in Canada . PSAC Bargaining UnitsAs of December 2004, PSAC holds certificates for 235 bargaining units. This generally means we are involved in bargaining for many units at the same time. Legal Jurisdiction
PSAC members are concentrated in certain jurisdictions in terms of labour legislation. As of December 2004, 84.5% of our members were covered by either the Public Service Labour Relations Act or the Parliamentary Employment and Staff Relations Act . We represent about three-quarters of all workers who fall under these acts.
About 7% of our membership falls under the Canada Labour Code , 5.5% under Territorial legislation and 3% under various pieces of provincial labour legislation.
